Claude Opus 5's New Tic: Everything Is "Load-Bearing"

Claude Opus 5 has picked up a verbal tic: it calls almost everything load-bearing, a metaphor borrowed from architecture. Developers started collecting examples after one Reddit post called an ordinary software build step load-bearing rather than tidy, and the thread that followed on Hacker News passed 1,700 points. A separate analysis of tens of thousands of real Opus 5 replies found the model also writes about three times as long as its predecessor, with 2.3 times more em dashes, while leaning on simpler individual words (AlphaSignal, Aug 2026).

The tic has a name now too. Developer educator Matt Pocock coined "seamslop" after asking Opus 5 to explain a topic and getting something technically correct yet unmistakably machine-made, an over-reliance on one early metaphor that gets stretched through an entire answer. The term went properly viral in the last week of August (explainx.ai, Aug 2026), joining "load-bearing" as shorthand for a style problem that outlives any single banned word.
